A Balloonista’s Guide to Christmas Decor

November means one thing – goodbye to spooky Halloween decorations and hello to all things festive. Whether you fancy your hand at DIY balloon decor or fancy leaving it to our expert balloon architects, this post is here to inspire you so keep reading to learn something new.

Balloon Christmas trees have been labeled as ‘this season’s “must-have” decoration’ by The Times and they are available to purchase via lots of major retailers from John Lewis & Partners to Amazon, to Urban Outfitters to Etsy. Despite their rising popularity, the internet has swiftly become inundated with reports of how notoriously difficult they are to build as well as complaints of how damaging the single use latex balloons are to the environment. Sustainability is at the heart of what we do at Balloonista and the latex we use in our balloons is derived from tree sap, meaning it biodegrades at the same rate as an oak leaf.

If that isn’t enough to put you off, here are some not so simple steps you can follow to create your own balloon tree that can be enjoyed for all of a couple of hours (around half the time that it will take you to assemble it).

You will need:

  • Lots of black balloons

  • Lots of green balloons in some smaller and some larger sizes

  • Some miniature balloons in your chosen colours

  • Lots of balloon ties

  • A balloon pump

  • A pole approximately 6 foot tall, attached to a weighted base

Method:

  1. Inflate as many balloons as possible and make sure they are tightly tied so as not to deflate.
  2. Using balloon ties tie 5 balloons together at their bases.
  3. Wrap all of these balloons around the base of your pole.
  4. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 with 5 larger green balloons and stack these around the pole on top of the black balloons.
  5. Repeat Step 4 two times to create three layers of large green balloons.
  6. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 with five smaller green balloons and keep repeating this process until the pole is covered.
  7. Inflate the remaining green balloons slightly smaller and repeat above steps to create the tapered top of the tree.
  8. Inflate some tiny coloured balloons and tuck them in between the green balloons to look like tree decorations.
  9. Sit back and admire your tree (quickly before it deflates!).
  10. (Optional) call Balloonista to come and build a bigger and better balloon Christmas tree for you.

In addition to having all the hard work done for you, you can also be assured that our balloon trees will last infinitely longer than their DIY counterparts. Their lifespan is dependent on the environment but our installations typically last for 5-7 days before they begin to deteriorate.

Additionally, our balloon trees are a sustainable option –  made using biodegradable latex which will typically biodegrade at the same rate as an oak leaf so you can enjoy your decorations with a clear conscience, knowing that they aren’t at the expense of the environment.
